Seal and Heidi Klum return to Careyes every year to celebrate their anniversary.,

Hollywood used to be full of Mexicans. That was a long time ago … a very long time ago, back before the Mexican-American War of 1847 to be precise, when all of California was Mexican territory. Today, Hollywood is finding its Mexican roots as celebrities have been coming down to Mexico by the privateplaneload. Check out a few of our favorite stars who have made homes for themselves south of the border.

Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith
In 1998, after Antonio Banderas filmed “The Mask of Zorro,” the Spaniard and his leading lady, Melanie Griffith, bought a historic home in the heart of San Miguel de Allende. While filming, Banderas stayed near in Casa Liza, near the Parque Juarez. He fell in love with the quiet, cobblestone streets popular with American expats and the rest is real estate history.

Harrison Ford and Calista Flockart
Antonio and Melanie aren’t the only Hollywood stars enjoying San Miguel. Harrison Ford and Calista Flockart have been vacationing in the colonial town for years. They’re rumored to be seriously looking for “the perfect place”. Last Christmas they were spotted chatting up local real estate agents, and looked like they meant business.

Doc Severinsen
The former bandleader for Johnny Carson’s “The Tonight Show” cashed out and moved with his wife, Emily, into what neighbors describe as a “very nice, big horse farm.” Over at the restaurant Bella Italia, Severinsen plays trumpet with some buddies in a band called El Ritmo de la Vida and plays back up for the legendary Gil and Carlos. When not touring, locals and tourists catch Doc playing Thursday through Sunday evenings.

Heidi Klum and Seal
Victoria’s Secret model and Project Runway host Heidi Klum and her musician husband, Seal, have a getaway villa in the small town of Costa Careyes. The nearby private beach is where the couple tied the knot, and they’ve been renewing their vows there every year since. (Except for this year thanks to swine flu.) Careyes is so exclusive that there are only 42 villas, 40 casitas, and one hotel. The Mexican haven is refreshingly free of marinas, airstrips, designer boutiques and nightclubs. Inside Heidi and Seal’s home is a master bathroom with a balcony overlooking the ocean, a central patio with a waterfall, and an open-air living room. They have been known to frequent over-the-top chic soirees with other fans of Costa Careyes like Madonna, Giorgio Armani, Mick Jagger, Francis Ford Coppola, and Uma Thurman. Those who don’t crash at Heidi’s villa typically rent out La Loma, an Indian-themed palace that goes for $9,000 to $15,000 a night—that's dollars, not pesos.

Joe Francis
Girls Gone Wild creator, Joe Francis, owns a palatial house in Punta Mita, just north of Puerto Vallarta. “Casa Aramara,” translates as “sacred place by the ocean” in the native Huichol, but we’re guessing nothing is sacred in Francis’ mansion. While he has lately been in Los Angeles defending himself against federal tax evasion charges (that’s a big house he would rather not visit). his friends have been enjoying sleeping in his incredible Mexican villa. Jennifer Aniston, Sheryl Crow, Courteney Cox, Kim Kardashian, and Demi Moore have all crashed at the 30,000-foot bachelor pad.

Kyan Douglas of Queer Eye For the Straight Guy
Grooming-guru Kyan Douglas, formerly of the Bravo show Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, is a Sayulita homeowner, a hip surfing village not far from Francis' villa. Sayulita is also an hour from downtown Puerto Vallarta, home of the most lively gay community in Mexico.

Sammy Hagar
Former Van Halen singer, Sammy Hagar, has a home in the former fishing village famously known as “Cabo” or Cabo San Lucas. Besides the pad, he also has a Mexican restaurant and a brand of tequila known as Cabo Wabo. (Apparently, it’s the second best-selling premium tequila in the US.) On living in Cabo, he’s been quoted as saying: “I love that Cabo Wabo lifestyle, which is beach all day, party all night." He starting coming back in 1982, began producing his tequila in 1992, and importing it in 1999. That's long enough not to call him a gringo anymore.

Hagar isn’t alone in Cabo. It’s been reported that Oprah Winfrey, John Travolta, and Madonna all have homes at the tip of the peninsula.
