Akumal is oldest town in the Riviera Maya located halfway between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. The town straddles two small bays – Half Moon Bay to the north and Akumal Bay to the south. The area was once a coconut plantation and is known locally as “The Place of the Turtle” since it’s beach is a vital breeding ground for giant green turtles. The town’s ecological reputation is rounded out by some of the best scuba diving in the region and a system of underwater caves in the surrounding jungle. Since Akumal was built before the gold rush, the town feels less overstuffed and more run down than Playa del Carmen or Cancun. The small, yet eclectic population of Mexicans and Americans, however, don't seem to mind the slower pace.
