Located a short ferry ride from Playa del Carmen, Cozumel is Mexico’s largest island at 9 by 31 miles. The island was traditionally a trading port and home to the Mayan goddess of fertility. In 1961 Jacques Cousteau blew the doors off the place, exposing it as a world class dive site with stunning biodiversity. The main city, San Miguel, is the fourth largest in the Riviera Maya, comprised of twelve colonias, filled with artisan craft stores, dive shops and restaurants, catering to hordes of cruise ship debarkees. Outside the city, locals find tranquility in the central jungle, southern beaches and undeveloped eastern shore. The annual threat of hurricanes gives Cozumeleños a convivial siege mentality and strong community identity.
